Explain the difference between a colony and a polis

The main difference between these two entities is that a polis is a city-state that is at least somewhat autonomous in its governance, and is geographically linked to the larger state in question, whereas a colony is an external entity that is ruled over and oftentimes exploited for the benefit of the colonizing country.
