I've always been pretty hopeless at place values when it came to hundredths and tenths and whatnot, but I believe 8.54 rounded to the nearest tenth is 8.50.
5 is in the tenths place, and so 54, which is both the numbers after the decimal point, would round to 50, which is closest in terms of tenths.
