well 1 3/4 as improper fraction is 7/4 so 7/4 / 1/2
7/4 x 2/1 is 14/4 or 3 1/2

first add 1 (= 4/4) to 3/4 which equals 7/4, now to get half of 7/4 you make it easier by changing it to 14/8 (= 7/4) 

now half of 14/8 is easy
