Gymnosperms were the first plants that did not require water for transferring sperm to eggs. Gymnosperms are seed plants that can not produce flowers or fruits. The four major categories of groups of gymnosperm are Cycadophyta, Ginkgophyta, Gnetophyta and Pinophyta. Gymnosperm has 1000 known species and there are 14 different plant families in it.
