Texas was part of Mexico at that time. On March 2, 1836, with the Alamo under obstruction, representatives from across Texas met and professed their freedom from Mexico. Although Mexico's war of freedom pressed out Spain in 1821, Texas did not continue under Mexican control for long. It turn into its own country, named the Republic of Texas, from 1836 up until it decided to link the United States in 1845.
