In the beginnings of the settlement of Jamestown, life was harsh. The people that had originally travelled there did not know how to maintain the essentials of life. They had no food, limited shelter, etc. During the winters, almost the entire population would die. Some people were said to have resorted to cannibalism. These conditions, along with the reported conditions of indentured servitude communicated back to those in England, discouraged others to come to Jamestown.
