What might be the consequences of setting aside this check on the executive branch?

If you remove the check on the executive branch then it could become too powerful and the president could become tyrannical, basically becoming something like a king was except that he would have a different title. The president could issue executive orders and nothing could stop him since the president is also the head of the military.
