Facebook doesn't charge you to use their site, but they make money somehow - it's by ads. You're forced to see advertisements in your feed, and each view costs money for advertisers. In addition, Facebook can also take information from you to help ensure that you're only getting ads that apply to you. In short, you're giving views to advertisements as well as your information to Facebook
