The sum of two numbers is 32 . one number is 3 times as large as the other. what are the numbers?

 Let the smaller number be a. If the other is 3 times larger, than it will equal 3*a. 

a + 3*a = 32 
4a = 32 
a = 8,  

so , the 1st number is 8 and the second one is 3*8 = 24.
