Each point on Earth is unique because it has particular characteristics to be distinguished. A specific point on Earth is called place, and the name given to it is called toponym. A point on Earth may be distinguished by its physical character, location, climate, topography, and elevation.

An area with one or more distinctive characteristics is called a region.  Language, religion, culture and material wealth are some characteristics that may describe a specific region.
