the first one would be the top half, the second would be the bottom half. It says that y is greater than in the first and less than in the second.

So the first thing was graphing the lines normally.
The trick is to not think that we're shading left or right of the line, but top or bottom since the y axis goes up and down.

Now we have to shade. If it's y is greater than (>), that means you shade all the y values above the line.
If y is less than (<), shade below the line.
