He was fascinated by legends of created beings. Then he is deeply affected by his mother's death and continues his research, eventually devising a technique for imparting life to non-living matter. He hopes to create a particularly beautiful human being and bring it to life, but is not skilled enough and creates a monster unintentionally. Disgusted by its appearance, he flees from it, and it hates him for the rejection :)
