Find the slope of the line through each pair of points (-2,-1) and (8,-3)

slope = y2 - y1/x2 - x1
          = -3 - (-1)/8 - (-2)
          = -3 + 1/ 8 + 2
          = -2/ 6
          = - 1/3

Slope is rise/run so you need the difference between each x and y
-2 and 8 have 10 units between them
-1 and -3 have 2 units
y is the rise, and x is the run
so your slope is 2/10 or 1/5
it is negative because the line is going downward 
final answer is -1/5
