First, subtracting a negative is really adding. Also we can convert the negative 1 and one-third to the improper fraction -4/3 to make it easier to deal with. So if we put our pencil at the starting point of -2/3 we will hop to the right 4/3 (since we are adding) to land at our answer of 2/3.
