Answer:

Probably trying to find the cause of death, maybe check blunt-force trauma and how the other injuries along with that wound are consistent to determine if it was a fall, strike, etc. They also check to see the victim's previous (to death) condition, were they already sick, was it natural, if they OD'd was it prescribed or OTC drugs, etc.
