The lines (| |) represent absolute value. If there's a number inbetween the lines, it's asking how far away the number is away from 0. If t = -9, the number is 9 away from 0, it can never be negative too. So |9| will still be 9 away from zero. Then subtract -5 by 9 to get 4.
