I think the answer is supposed to be the sun because that is where plants get their energy from

Animals get the energy and building materials that they need from food. Some animals eat other animals as a source of food. Other animals eat plants.

Plants need food, too. Plants get their energy from sugars that they make using energy from the Sun. So, the Sun is the ultimate source of energy for food.
