Let the number be x

7/8 of the number is 7/8x and it equals -35:

7/8x = -35

Find x by dividing both sides by 7/8

When you divide by a fraction, flip the fraction over and then multiply:

x = -35 x 8/7 = (-35 x 8) / 7 = -280/7 = -40

The number is -40
