Figurative: the room is as messy as ones mind when information is set down and lost. Scattered pieces everywhere with a home that they belong to, but they are all out of place at the moment.

Literal: the room is very messy. There are clothes everywhere. On the bed, the floor, and the dresser. They all have a place to go, but at the moment all the items are scattered around the room.
