Why does Steinbeck use the second person “you” in recounting the physical effects of combat?

Steinbeck switches to the second person in 'Why Soldier's Won't Talk' when he catalogs the responses of the soldier's he talked to about the effects of combat to make the experience more real, personal and authentic to the reader. He does this in the 'Grapes of Wrath' as well.
