this is a number line

from X to Z, the legnth is 50
Y is between X and Z
therefor
XZ=XY+YZ
50=a+a+8
50=2a+8
minus 8 from both sides
42=2a
divide both sides by 2
21=a
a+8=29

XY=21
YZ=29
