Well for starters, they're not fighting against their fathers/sons or any kind of family. Civil war soldiers also got paid monthly and not very much. $13 which now is $188.88 A MONTH. Modern day soldiers get paid over $1,000 dollars a month. Technology also has changed a lot since then.
