Deflation in economics is a fall in the general price level of goods and services. Deflation occurs when the rate of inflation falls below 0% (a negative rate of inflation). Deflation differs from disinflation, a slowdown in the rate of inflation, i.e. when inflation falls to a lower rate but is still positive.
