Hello,

x²+6x-40=x
==>x²+5x-40=0
Δ=5²+4*40=185

[tex]x= \dfrac{-6-\sqrt{185}}{2} \ or \ x= \dfrac{-6+\sqrt{185}}{2} [/tex]
