Because Dante wanted to prove that Boniface VIII should be in hell. Although he does not physically appear in the scene in hell and not because Dante was generous but because at the time of writing Dante, Pope Boniface VIII was still alive, but the ingenuity of Dante makes him develop a character without showing his face.
