Explain how combining like terms is similar to adding and subtracting whole numbers. How are they different?

Answer:

It's similar in a sense that to combine like terms, you simply add and subtract terms together. Therefore, the operations are the same.

The difference is that you don't combine all numbers. They must have the same variable value attached to them in order to add/subtract the numbers.
