you can use them to help understand quantities such as

x, y
1, 2
2, 4
3, 6

this helps to show relation such as adding by two or you can have a multiplying rate of change whi chub can show that each time a number is multiplied by something it changes
like if the question states: Bob puts $500 into the bank and he collects interest of $10 once a week how much money does he make in interest in 4 weeks.
