Both students used the FOIL rule correctly (FOIL stands for "first, outer, inner, last" to help remember how to multiply out two binomials), except of course Gabrielle's mistake getting -24. The FOIL rule is basically 2 applications of the distributive property. You can also use the box method to visually organize the terms. See the attached image for the box method.
