This is a great life skill to learn and something you will use everyday.  To find tax, multiply the cost by the tax rate as a decimal.  Here is how it is done:

cost: $85

tax rate: 9%=0.09 as a decimal

85 times 0.09= 7.65

You will pay $7.65 in taxes on the new cell phone.
