On a long downhill grade, the combination of being in a low gear and light on your breaks gives you better control of your vehicle and reduces wear on your brakes. When you are traveling downhill in a stick shift vehicle, it is best to be in allow gear for slower movement and more control of the vehicle. Not only is having more control for downhill traveling, it creates less wear and tear for your breaks and your breaks will go further.
