Why was learning how to make things out of papyrus an important achievement for the Egyptians?

Because they'd use the papyrus paper as a writing tool to send messages back and forth and to use as a writing surface. Without that they'd be without paper, which is actually something we need. The Egyptian papyrus is believed to be one of the first papers made too so without them making it humanity would've gone a while without it.
